Trust is critical in student-teacher relationships. Building trust and maintaining trust with students are critical to learning. “Learning for many students is risky business” and if your students do not trust that you are there to guide them they simply will not see the risk of learning as worthwhile (Hattie & Yates 2014 p. 21). If a student does not trust that making mistakes is okay or that asking for help is acceptable their learning potential is limited. Some ways I am going to assure I build trusting relationships with my students is through being honest, reliable, and fair (Alber 2010). All of these practices are essential to assuring a positive trusting relationship because they provide students with a consistent structure that they can expect. If students do not know what to expect from your class each day it can cause insecurities and ultimately disrupt their learning.
